SEA TURTLES FACING EXTINCTION

Every summer, from May to September, the loggerhead sea turtle, Caretta Carretta, and the green turtle, Chelonia Mydas, come to our sandy beaches along the Mediterranean cost to lay their eggs. They have done so for millions of years. Today the loggerhead and green turtles face extinction due to over-fishing, over construction and tourist activity on the nesting beaches. Our sothern coasts are among the last remaining major breeding sites for the sea turtles in the whole Mediterranean basin. The breeding grounds stretch from Dalyan in the west to Samandag in Hatay (Antakya) province in the east and they include a number of beaches around Fethiye of  which the very popular Çaliş is one. Those using local beaches are asked to show a proper care for the environment. Please remember the turtles were here long before we were.
