Shopping in Fethiye is always a pleasure, Merchants will greet you with a glass of tea or a soft drink and will be happy to take time in satisfying your every wish. The Paspatur district in particular is a shoppers paradise. Here you will find carpets, leather goods, gold, silver and jewelry of every type. For the latter, try the Telmessos Gold Gallery (tel. 612 28 10). Gold is normally sold by weight at a fixed price according to the number of carats, but for other high priced items be prepared to bargain this is expected, normal and part of the fun except in certain larger establishments which use fixed, marked prices. You are advised never make a major purchase without comparing prices first.
If shopping makes you hungry, Fethiye is well-equipped with restaurants. Turkish cuisine is rated amongst the top three in the world alongside French and Chinese. For the real thing, try Restaurant La Turquoise at Montana Pine Resort where you can eat by the pool to the accompaniment of live classical Turkish music. La Turquoise also specializes in French cuisine, but you are advised to telephone for a reservation. The number is 616 63 66.
Speaking of specialization, the best way to sample Turkish fish is to find an expert in its preparation, such as Rafet Restaurant on the Kordon (Waterfront) (tel. 614 11 06). If Turkish food really dosen't agree with you, how about Chinese ? The Peking Restaurant (tel 612 07 06) has been open for six years and has a chef trained in Shanghi, so there is no question of authenticity. Alternatively, the Han Cafe Restaurant specializes in English food and is open 7.00a.m to 2.00 a.m. Its phone number is 614 65 22.
There's no such thing as a free lunch and all this costs money, so you may need to change some. We recommend Dikmen Change Office on Ataturk Street, tel. 612 24 40. Right, so now you've eaten and you still have money in your pocket. What about an evening at the disco ? The Underground Disco at Oludeniz (tel. 616 73 31) is one famous night spot, but if disco is not to your taste you can also dance, or just sit and enjoy a drink at Yes Bar on Cumhuriyet Street in Fethiye itself (tel. 612 42 39).
If after any or all of the above activities, you feel a little sweaty and in need of a clean up, why not try a traditional Turkish bath. Convenient for the shops in paspatur is the Old Turkish Bath (tel. 614 93 18) which has a history going back 400 years. Even if you are already clean, a look at the inside of a Turkish bath is an experience not to be missed by any visitor from overseas.
